CEPU targeting new members

Date: 12 March 2010

It's straight-forward logic: the more union members that exist in a workplace, the stronger the voice we all have in getting better wages and conditions.

Your Union is determined to lift the level of membership we have in our traditional areas such as Australia Post, Telstra and Optus.

We are also looking at "green-fields" too - new companies in our areas of coverage, where employees want the help of a union in their workplace.

The CEPU has taken this step because we recognise that more has to be done to address the general decline in union membership faced in all industries across the nation.

International research as well as common sense shows that workers in unionised workplaces enjoy better conditions and pay than those in workplaces without a strong union presence.

Amazingly, polls show that at least 40% of Australians have never had the opportunity to hear one on one about the benefits that a union offers.

We are making sure all in the workers in the communications sector get that opportunity. All workers should have the option of working with a union help to pursue more protection, pay, influence and savings. We are on the case for you.

We've boosted the focus on recruitment by bringing on board new union employees whose job is to concentrate on recruiting.

We're also bringing in such union staff through a terrific new association we have set up with a professional recruitment services firm WorkPartners, who have helped other unions and non-government organisations like Greenpeace grow their membership base.

Our recruitment teams get sent to specific workplaces, identified for their potential to pump up union membership and strengthen the overall presence of the union.

The team of specialised recruiters employed through the assistance of WorkPartners builds on the work of our existing delegates, officials and organisers - however this team is focused solely on the recruitment of non-members.

--------------------------

There's been some media focus on this lately, some of it's way over the top and others have given a balanced take on what we're doing, such as the 7.30 Report. Click here for more details

---------------------------------

We want to let you know that our work with WorkPartners is just one step we have taken to keep the union strong through active membership.

But it is the job of all of us within the Union to recruit and grow our organisation - by taking the first simple step: speaking with workmates and talking with them about the benefits of joining the CEPU.
